The Alpha course is a ten week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith to your life today. It is being run by all the main denominations in over 150 countries with over seven million participants to date. As well as being a social opportunity, Alpha constitutes an easygoing forum for healthy discussion of many of the common questions about Jesus, the Bible, God's purpose for us, suffering, and other religions. Alpha attracts a wide age range, from teens to adults. Attendees include atheists, agnostics, lapsed Christians, those wanting to strengthen their faith, and people in a variety of circumstances.
Each weekly event begins with a social time around dinner, where new friendships and connections are made. Afterwards, an entertaining and thought-provoking video and/or talk is given, with titles such as: "Christianity: Boring, Untrue, & Irrelevant?" and "How Can I Be Sure Of My Faith?" Using unique and humorous examples accompanied by stories, the talks cover questions and viewpoints that many of us have. Small group discussions are also part of the evening's events. Attendees leave with the energy to engage more with others about what they have just learned and heard.
Alpha provides a forum for lively discussion, and many attendees discover that they are not alone in what they think or feel. They often return to Alpha, with some choosing the course as their ministry.
Alpha courses take place in the fall, winter and spring. They include ten once-weekly meetings, and a weekend retreat.
